Charlotte to Winston-Salem and Old Salem in a Luxury Rental: A Piedmont Day Trip

Silver Corvette C8 from the Royal Rentals Charlotte fleet, ready for a day trip to Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Charlotte. In about an hour and a half you go from Uptown's towers to a city known for its arts district, its historic Moravian village, its museums and its tree-lined neighborhoods. The drive itself is simple interstate cruising through the North Carolina Piedmont, which makes it a comfortable trip in any car in our Charlotte fleet.

This guide covers how to plan a Charlotte to Winston-Salem day trip in a luxury rental: the route, the stops worth your time, mileage, timing and which car to pick.

The Route From Charlotte to Winston-Salem

There are two common ways to make the drive, and both are paved interstate and highway the whole way.

Option One: I-85 North Through Lexington

The most direct route heads northeast on Interstate 85 past Concord and Salisbury, then turns north toward Winston-Salem near Lexington. It is roughly 80 to 90 miles from Uptown Charlotte depending on your exact start and end points, and it takes about an hour and a half without traffic.

Option Two: I-77 North and I-40 East

If you are starting north of Charlotte, near Huntersville or Lake Norman, it can make sense to take Interstate 77 north toward Statesville and then Interstate 40 east into Winston-Salem. It is a slightly different landscape, with more rolling countryside, and a good way to make the trip a loop by taking one route up and the other back.

Timing Your Day

For a relaxed day, leave Charlotte mid-morning after rush hour, spend late morning in Old Salem, have lunch downtown, visit Reynolda in the afternoon and head home before the evening traffic builds. Many Old Salem and Reynolda attractions keep set hours and some close on certain days of the week, so check their current schedules before you go. In fall, the drive is especially pretty as the trees along the interstate turn, and spring brings the gardens at Reynolda into bloom.

Whichever route you choose, leave yourself time around Charlotte's rush hours. Weekday mornings and late afternoons on I-85 and I-77 can add a lot of time to the drive.

What to See in Winston-Salem

Old Salem

Old Salem is the city's historic district, built around a restored Moravian settlement with brick and timber buildings, gardens and museums. It is a walkable area, so park once and explore on foot. The streets are narrow and some are brick, so take your time and use designated parking.

Reynolda

Reynolda, the former R.J. Reynolds estate, includes Reynolda House Museum of American Art, formal gardens and a small village of shops and restaurants. The grounds are a relaxed stop for an afternoon and a good backdrop for photos.

Downtown and the Arts District

Downtown Winston-Salem has a compact arts district with galleries, restaurants and coffee shops. It is a natural lunch or dinner stop before you head back to Charlotte, and it is easy to park nearby.

Planning Your Mileage

Every rental must stay within a 200-mile radius of the pickup zip code, and Winston-Salem is well within it. Daily mileage allowances run from 75 to 120 miles depending on the vehicle, and extra miles are billed at $0.50 or $1 per mile. A round trip to Winston-Salem plus some driving around town is likely to be somewhere around 170 to 200 miles, which is more than a single day's allowance for every car in our fleet. Plan on a two-day rental or budget for extra miles so there are no surprises at return.

Which Car to Rent for the Trip

For a Couple or Solo Driver

The Corvette C8 Silver is a great fit for a Piedmont day trip. It is comfortable at highway speed, it has a usable front and rear trunk for a day bag, and it turns the interstate miles into part of the fun.

For a Group or Family

If you are bringing friends or family, the Custom Black Lamborghini Urus and the Mercedes G63 give everyone a real seat and space for shopping bags or a weekend bag if you stay overnight. See every car available in Charlotte on our Charlotte rentals page.

If You'd Rather Not Drive

If you would rather enjoy the day without driving, ask about our Black Service, which pairs a vehicle with a professional driver.

Rental Rules to Keep in Mind

Drivers must be at least 21, or 25 for certain vehicles, with a valid license and full-coverage insurance in the same name. Use 91 octane or higher and return the car with at least the same fuel level. Speeds over 100 mph, racing and unpaved surfaces are not allowed. Late returns are $50 per 30 minutes, so build a buffer into your drive home.
