Scottsdale to Saguaro Lake on the Bush Highway: A Half-Day Desert Drive in a Luxury Rental

Some of the best driving near Scottsdale doesn't require a long road trip. Head east out of the Valley and within about half an hour the subdivisions give way to the Tonto National Forest, the Salt River and a two-lane road that curves between saguaro-covered hills. The Bush Highway runs along the Lower Salt River to Saguaro Lake, one of the reservoirs that sit in the canyons east of Phoenix. It is an easy half-day drive, it is paved the whole way, and it gives you real desert scenery without committing your whole rental day to the highway.
This guide covers how to plan the drive in a luxury rental: the route, where to stop, when to go, what to know about the rental rules, and which car in our Scottsdale fleet fits the day.
The Route From Scottsdale to Saguaro Lake
From most of Scottsdale, the simplest approach is to head toward the Loop 202 or Shea Boulevard and work your way east to the Beeline Highway (State Route 87), or to come up from the south through Mesa on Power Road, which turns into the Bush Highway as it crosses into the national forest. Either way, the drive from central Scottsdale is roughly 30 to 45 miles each way depending on where you start, which makes it one of the shortest scenic loops on our list.
The Bush Highway is the highlight. It follows the river through the Lower Salt River recreation area, with wide desert views, gentle curves and short climbs over ridges before it reaches the turnoff for Saguaro Lake. From there you can return the way you came or close the loop on the Beeline Highway back toward Fountain Hills and Scottsdale.
A Loop Through Fountain Hills
If you want a little more road, return through Fountain Hills on Shea Boulevard. The town sits at the edge of the McDowell Mountains and is an easy place to stop for coffee or lunch before you head back to Scottsdale. It turns the drive into a clean loop instead of an out-and-back.
Stops Worth Planning Around
The Lower Salt River
The river corridor is home to the Salt River wild horses, and many drivers spot them grazing near the water, especially in the cooler morning hours. Pull over only at designated parking areas, give the animals plenty of space and never feed them. Several of the river recreation sites in the Tonto National Forest require a recreation pass to park, so check the forest's current pass rules before you stop.
Saguaro Lake
Saguaro Lake has a marina area with lake views framed by desert cliffs. It is a good place to stretch your legs, take photos with the car and the water in the background, and decide whether to head back or keep exploring. Weekends can be busy, so a weekday morning is the calmest time to visit.
Usery Pass Road
If you come in from the Mesa side, Usery Pass Road is a short, scenic paved road that climbs over a saddle near Usery Mountain Regional Park. It pairs well with the Bush Highway if you want a few extra curves on the way out.
Best Time of Year and Day to Go
Fall, winter and spring are the most comfortable seasons for this drive, and November through March brings mild days that suit an open-top car. In summer, go early in the morning and keep the drive short. Weekend afternoons bring heavy recreation traffic to the river and the lake, especially in warm weather, so a weekday or an early start will give you a much better drive.
Remember that weather is part of the plan. Our policy does not allow refunds or date changes for unexpected weather, so check the forecast before you book and plan around monsoon season in the late summer.
Which Car to Rent for the Drive
For the Driving Itself
The McLaren 720S Spider and the Ferrari 488 Spider are the obvious picks for a scenic desert road. With the roof down, the Bush Highway is exactly the kind of drive these cars are built to enjoy at a relaxed, legal pace. The Custom Corvette C8 Silver is another strong choice if you want a mid-engine car for the day.
For Groups and Families
If you are bringing friends or family, the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, Mercedes G63, Escalade or Lincoln Navigator give everyone a comfortable seat and space for a cooler and gear. Browse the full Scottsdale lineup on our Scottsdale rentals page.
Rental Rules to Keep in Mind
The drive fits comfortably within our rules, but a few are worth repeating. Every rental must stay within a 200-mile radius of the pickup zip code, and daily mileage allowances run from 75 to 120 miles depending on the vehicle, with extra miles billed at $0.50 or $1 per mile. A Saguaro Lake loop usually fits inside a single day's allowance, but add up your full day of driving before you go.
Stay on paved roads. Our terms do not allow driving on unpaved surfaces, so skip the dirt pullouts and gravel lots and use paved parking only. Speeds over 100 mph, racing, track use and speed tests are not allowed. Use 91 octane or higher and return the car with at least the same fuel level you picked it up with. You can read everything in our terms and conditions.
