Adding a Second Driver to an Exotic Car Rental: Rules, Responsibilities and How It Works

Road trips, anniversaries, long weekends and golf getaways often have one thing in common: two people who both want a turn behind the wheel. Sharing the driving on an exotic or luxury rental is possible, but it works differently than at a standard rental counter. The rules are strict for a reason, and knowing them before you book means no confusion at pickup.
This guide explains how adding an additional driver works on a Royal Rentals booking in Scottsdale and Charlotte, who can qualify, what the primary renter is responsible for and how to plan a trip around two drivers.
The Short Version: One Additional Driver, Named and Signed
Our terms and conditions allow only one additional person, other than the renter, to drive the rental car. That person's details must be included in the rental contract, and they must sign and initial the contract. No one else is allowed to drive the vehicle, no matter the situation.
In practice, that means:
Decide before pickup who the second driver will be.
Make sure their details go on the contract.
Have them sign and initial the contract.
Do not hand the keys to anyone else during the rental, including friends who join you partway through the trip.
Who Can Be the Additional Driver
The terms apply to both the renter and the additional driver, and both must agree to them. That means the second driver should meet the same basic requirements as the renter:
Age
Drivers must be at least 21 years old, or at least 25 years old for certain vehicles. If your second driver is under 25, confirm at booking that the car you want is open to their age group.
A Valid Driver's License
Every driver must hold a valid, active driver's license, and nobody may drive the car without their license on them.
Insurance
The renter must show an active full-coverage insurance policy that matches the name on their driver's license, valid until at least seven days after the car is returned. Confirm at booking whether we need any insurance details for your additional driver as well, so everything is ready on pickup day. Our insurance requirements guide explains what full coverage means and how to check your policy.
What the Primary Renter Is Responsible For
The rental is in the renter's name, and the responsibility stays with the renter. Under our terms, the renter is fully responsible for damage to the vehicle, or its cost, if someone else causes damage while the car is rented under their name. That includes damage caused by the additional driver.
The renter is also responsible for every toll, parking charge, ticket and moving violation during the rental, whoever was driving at the time. Choose your second driver as carefully as you would choose who to lend your own car to.
The Same Rules Apply to Both Drivers
No track use, racing, speed tests or demonstrations.
Never drive over 100 mph.
No driving on unpaved surfaces.
No teaching anyone to drive in the car.
Stay within a 200-mile radius of the pickup location's zip code.
No smoking of any kind. Smoking in the vehicle forfeits the entire security deposit.
If either driver breaks these rules, the rental can be ended and the vehicle recovered, and the renter risks losing the entire security deposit and may face additional charges.
When a Second Driver Makes the Most Sense
Long Day Trips
Drives like Scottsdale to Sedona or Charlotte to Asheville are long enough that sharing the wheel keeps both drivers fresh and lets each of you enjoy the best stretches of road. Remember that daily mileage allowances are 75 to 120 miles depending on the vehicle, and extra miles cost $0.50 or $1 each, whoever is driving.
Couples Weekends
In a two-seater like the Ferrari 488 Spider or the Corvette C8, adding your partner as the second driver means you can both experience the car instead of one person riding along all weekend.
A Designated Driver for Dinner, Tastings or Celebrations
Wine country trips, rooftop dinners and celebrations go better when one person is not drinking. Naming that person as the additional driver gives your group a safe way home in the car you rented.
When You Need More Than Two Drivers
If your plans call for several people to drive, a rental is not the right fit, because only one additional driver is ever allowed. Instead, consider our Black Service, where a professional chauffeur handles the driving, or a vehicle like the Luxury Mercedes Sprinter Van in Scottsdale, which can be booked with a driver so nobody in the group has to drive at all.
Tips for a Smooth Pickup With Two Drivers
Bring both drivers to pickup if you can, with their licenses, so the contract can be signed and initialed on the spot.
Have your insurance card or declarations page ready to show.
Make sure $5,000 is available on your card or account for the security deposit, which is held from one day before the rental until seven days after. If you pay by debit card, the deposit is paid in cash.
Agree on fuel and return plans together. Use 91 octane or higher, return the car with the same fuel level or more, and remember late returns cost $50 for every 30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many drivers can be on an exotic car rental?
Two: the renter and one additional driver. The additional driver must be listed in the contract and sign and initial it. No one else may drive.
Can my additional driver be under 25?
Drivers must be at least 21, and certain vehicles require drivers to be 25 or older. Check which cars are open to your second driver's age when you book.
Who pays if the additional driver damages the car?
The renter. Under our terms, the renter is fully responsible for damage caused by someone else while the vehicle is rented in their name.
Can I add a driver halfway through the rental?
Plan the second driver before pickup. Only people who have signed the contract may drive. If your plans change, contact us before anyone else drives the car.
