Exotic Car Rental Insurance: What Full Coverage Means and How to Check Your Policy Before You Book

Insurance is the part of renting an exotic car that people think about least and that causes the most last-minute surprises. At Royal Rentals, your own full-coverage auto insurance is what covers the car during your rental, so it needs to be in place and in the right name before pickup. This guide explains what we require, how to check your policy, what to ask your insurance company and what happens if something goes wrong. It applies to rentals in both Scottsdale and Charlotte.
What Royal Rentals Requires
Our terms and conditions set out the insurance requirements clearly. Before you pick up the car you must show:
An active full-coverage car insurance policy.
A policy in the same name as the driver's license of the person renting.
A policy that stays active until at least 7 days after the rental car is returned.
These requirements apply alongside the other basics: drivers must be at least 21, or 25 for certain vehicles, and hold a valid driver's license. For the deposit side of booking, see our guide to the security deposit and requirements.
What Full Coverage Usually Means
Full coverage is not one single product. It is a common way of describing a policy that includes more than the state minimum liability coverage. In general, it usually means:
Liability Coverage
Liability covers damage or injury you cause to other people and their property. Every state requires some level of liability coverage, but liability alone is not full coverage.
Collision Coverage
Collision helps pay for damage to the car you are driving if it is involved in an accident.
Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive helps pay for damage from events other than a collision, such as theft, vandalism, hail or falling objects.
If your policy only carries liability, it does not meet our requirement. Your insurance company or agent can tell you exactly which coverages you have.
How to Check Your Policy Before You Book
A five-minute call to your insurance company or agent can save a lot of stress at pickup. Here is what to confirm.
Does My Policy Extend to Rental Cars?
Many personal auto policies extend coverage to a rental car, but not all do, and some have conditions. Ask whether your collision and comprehensive coverage apply when you are driving a rental.
Are There Limits That Matter for a High-Value Car?
Exotic and luxury vehicles are worth more than most everyday cars. Ask your insurer how your policy handles a high-value vehicle and whether any limits or exclusions apply to exotic or luxury cars.
Is the Policy in My Name and Active Through the Right Date?
The policy must match the name on your driver's license, and it must remain active until at least 7 days after you return the car. If your renewal date falls inside that window, confirm the renewal before you book.
What About My Credit Card's Rental Benefits?
Some credit cards offer rental car benefits, but many of them exclude exotic, luxury or high-value vehicles. Do not assume a card benefit replaces the full-coverage policy we require. Our requirement is an active full-coverage auto insurance policy in your name.
What Happens If There Is an Accident
No one plans for an accident, but it helps to know the steps. Our terms say to call the police first, then your insurance company, and then the rental office.
Under our terms, your insurance company is responsible for the damages, loss of use or total loss of the vehicle. If your insurance company does not pay for the vehicle within 30 days of the loss, you are responsible for the amount of the damages or the total value of the vehicle, as well as the daily rental rate. That is why it matters so much to confirm your coverage before you drive.
Insurance and the Additional Driver
One additional driver is allowed if they are named on the contract and sign it. Before anyone else gets behind the wheel, confirm with your insurer how your policy treats another driver, and make sure that person meets our age and license requirements too. No one other than the people who sign the contract is allowed to drive the car.
Tips for a Smooth Pickup
Have your insurance card or declarations page ready, either printed or on your phone.
Double-check that the name on your policy matches your driver's license exactly.
Confirm the policy dates cover your rental plus at least 7 days after the return.
Answer every question in the booking form accurately. Our terms do not allow fake or incomplete information on cards, licenses or insurance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my own insurance to rent an exotic car from Royal Rentals?
Yes. You need an active full-coverage car insurance policy in the same name as your driver's license before pickup.
Is liability-only insurance enough?
No. Liability alone is not full coverage. Your policy needs to meet the full-coverage requirement.
How long does my insurance need to stay active?
Until at least 7 days after you return the rental car.
Can I rely on my credit card's rental coverage?
Many card benefits exclude exotic and luxury vehicles, and our requirement is a full-coverage auto policy in your name. Check with your card issuer and your insurer.
What should I do if I have an accident?
Call the police first, then your insurance company, and then the rental office.
Does the same requirement apply in Scottsdale and Charlotte?
