Scottsdale to Lake Pleasant in a Luxury Rental: A Desert Lake Drive Along the Carefree Highway

Silver custom Corvette C8 from the Royal Rentals Scottsdale fleet, ready for a desert drive to Lake Pleasant

Lake Pleasant is one of the easiest ways to trade the Valley's traffic for open desert and a big blue lake without spending your whole rental day on the interstate. It sits northwest of Phoenix, it is reached on paved highways the whole way, and the drive from Scottsdale takes you through Carefree and across the Sonoran Desert foothills on one of the most relaxed roads in the area. For a half-day or full-day outing in a luxury rental, it is hard to beat.

This guide covers how to plan the drive: the route, where to stop, when to go, how the trip fits the rental's mileage rules, and which car in our Scottsdale fleet suits the day.

The Route From Scottsdale to Lake Pleasant

The most scenic approach starts on Scottsdale Road. Head north out of Scottsdale through north Scottsdale and up to the towns of Carefree and Cave Creek, where the desert opens up and the boulder hills start to appear. From there, turn west on the Carefree Highway. It runs across the north Valley, crosses Interstate 17, and continues west as State Route 74 toward the lake and the regional park entrances.

If you would rather move quickly, you can also take the Loop 101 to Interstate 17 north and exit at the Carefree Highway. It is less scenic but more direct. Many drivers go out on the scenic route and return on the freeway, which turns the trip into a loop.

How Far Is It?

Depending on where you start in Scottsdale and which route you take, plan on roughly 45 to 60 miles each way. A round trip with a few stops will usually land somewhere around 100 to 120 miles. Keep that number in mind, because it matters for the mileage allowance on your rental, which we cover below.

Stops Worth Planning Around

Carefree and Cave Creek

These two towns make a natural first stop. Carefree is known for its quiet streets and desert architecture, and Cave Creek has a western-town main drag with restaurants and shops. Either one is a good place for coffee or breakfast before you continue west, and the stretch of Scottsdale Road leading up to them is one of the nicer drives in the north Valley on its own.

Lake Pleasant Regional Park

Lake Pleasant Regional Park is run by Maricopa County and surrounds the lake. Expect a vehicle entry fee; check Maricopa County Parks for current rates and hours before you go. Inside the park there are scenic overlooks of the lake and the dam, picnic areas and marina facilities. The views from the overlooks, with the water set against the desert mountains, are the reason most people make the drive.

The Marinas

The lake has marina areas where you can stop, walk the docks and look out over the water. If your group wants to get out on the lake itself, look up the marinas' current services before you go, and plan parking so the car stays on paved surfaces.

When to Go

The best time for this drive is from late fall through spring, when daytime temperatures in the Valley are mild and top-down driving is comfortable. Mornings are the sweet spot: the light is good for photos, the roads are quieter, and you can be back in Scottsdale by early afternoon. Weekends at the lake can get busy in peak season, so a weekday trip is calmer if your schedule allows.

In summer, go early and keep the trip short. The desert gets very hot by midday, and a lake overlook is a lot more enjoyable at 8 AM than at 2 PM.

What to Know About the Rental Rules for This Drive

Lake Pleasant fits comfortably inside the rules, but a few of them are worth reading before you plan the day. You can review everything on our terms and conditions page.

Mileage: daily mileage is 75 to 120 miles depending on the vehicle, and extra miles cost $0.50 or $1 per mile. A full round trip with stops can approach or pass a single day's allowance, so check the allowance for the car you choose, or book a second day if you want to explore more.

Radius: the car must stay within a 200-mile radius of the pickup zip code. Lake Pleasant is well inside that.

Paved roads only: driving on unpaved surfaces is not allowed. Some areas around the lake and the shoreline are dirt, so stick to paved roads and paved parking.

Fuel: use 91 octane or higher and return the car with the same fuel level or more. Fill up in the north Valley before you head back.

Speed: no driving over 100 mph and no racing or speed demonstrations. The Carefree Highway is a cruising road, not a test track.

Which Car to Rent for a Lake Pleasant Day

Corvette C8 or Ferrari 488 for Two

If it is a day for two, a mid-engine sports car makes the most of the open desert roads. Our custom Corvette C8 is a great fit for a scenic cruise, and the Ferrari 488 Spider adds open-air driving for clear fall and spring mornings.

Lamborghini Urus or Bentley Bentayga for a Small Group

If you are bringing friends, coolers or beach bags for the marina, an SUV is more practical. The Lamborghini Urus gives you supercar character with four seats, and the Bentley Bentayga is the quiet, comfortable choice for a relaxed day at the lake.
