Scottsdale to Prescott in a Luxury Rental: Planning a Day Trip to Arizona's Mountain Town

Custom silver Corvette C8 from the Royal Rentals Scottsdale fleet, ready for a road trip north to Prescott

When the Valley heats up, Prescott is one of the easiest escapes in Arizona. The historic mountain town sits roughly 100 miles northwest of Scottsdale at more than a mile of elevation, which means pine trees, cooler air and a downtown built around a classic courthouse square. It is also a great reason to get behind the wheel of something special. This guide covers how to plan a Scottsdale to Prescott day trip in a luxury or exotic rental, which cars fit the drive and what to know about miles and requirements before you book.

Why Prescott Makes a Great Drive from Scottsdale

The drive itself is part of the appeal. You leave the Sonoran Desert, climb through saguaro country and high desert grassland, and arrive in a town that feels a world away from Old Town Scottsdale. The route is paved the whole way, the views open up as you gain elevation, and Prescott's compact downtown makes it easy to park once and explore on foot.

The Route

Most drivers take the Loop 101 to I-17 north, then exit onto State Route 69 toward Prescott Valley and Prescott. Depending on traffic and your starting point, plan on about two hours each way. I-17 can get busy on weekend mornings and Sunday afternoons, so an early start helps.

The Scenic Option Through Jerome

If you want more curves, you can return a different way. State Route 89A climbs over Mingus Mountain between Prescott and the old mining town of Jerome, then drops into the Verde Valley, where you can rejoin I-17 south. It is a beautiful, winding paved road, but it adds miles and time, so factor that into your plan.

What to See and Do in Prescott

Courthouse Plaza and Whiskey Row

The heart of town is the Yavapai County Courthouse and its shady plaza, surrounded by shops, galleries and restaurants. Across the street, Whiskey Row on Montezuma Street is lined with historic saloons and storefronts. It is a perfect place for lunch, a walk and photos of your car on a classic main street.

Watson Lake and the Granite Dells

Just north of downtown, Watson Lake sits among the rounded boulders of the Granite Dells. It is one of the most photographed landscapes in the area and an easy stop on the way in or out of town. Stay in paved parking areas, since our rental terms do not allow driving on unpaved surfaces.

Thumb Butte and the Pines

Thumb Butte, west of downtown, is a local landmark with hiking trails and forest views. Even if you do not hike, the drive out of town into the pines is a nice contrast to the desert you left that morning.

Events and Seasons

Prescott is busy around the Fourth of July, when Prescott Frontier Days brings its rodeo and parade to town, and during summer weekends when Valley residents head north to escape the heat. Fall brings cooler days and comfortable drives. If you are planning around a big weekend, reserve your car early.

Choosing the Right Car for the Prescott Drive

The best car depends on who is riding with you and how you want the day to feel.

For Two: Corvette, Ferrari or McLaren

If it is just you and a passenger, the Custom Corvette C8 Silver is a fun, mid-engine way to enjoy the climb out of the Valley. For a true supercar day, the Ferrari 488 and McLaren 720S turn a highway drive into an event. Keep in mind that two-seat sports cars have limited storage.

For a Small Group: Urus, G63 or Bentayga

Bringing friends or family? The Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes G63 and Bentley Bentayga offer more seats and luggage space while still making an entrance on Whiskey Row.

For a Larger Group: Escalade or Navigator

For a group heading up for a wedding, reunion or rodeo weekend, the Escalade Premium Luxury and Lincoln Navigator offer three rows of seating. You can compare every car on the Scottsdale rentals page.

Plan Your Miles Before You Go

This is the most important part of planning a Prescott trip. A round trip from Scottsdale is roughly 200 miles before any side trips, and each Royal Rentals vehicle includes 75 to 120 miles per day depending on the car. Extra miles cost 50 cents or $1 each, depending on the vehicle.

Booking two days instead of one can spread the drive across a larger mileage allowance and lets you stay overnight in Prescott.

The scenic route through Jerome adds distance, so add it to your estimate if you plan to take it.

Prescott is well within the 200-mile radius of our Scottsdale pickup location. Keep any extra stops inside that radius as well.

Rules to Keep in Mind on the Road

Use 91 octane or higher fuel, and return the car with the same fuel level or more. Plan a fuel stop before you get back to Scottsdale.

No unpaved roads, track use, racing or driving over 100 mph.

No smoking of any kind in the vehicle. Smoking forfeits the entire deposit.

Weather can change faster at elevation. We cannot offer refunds or date changes for unexpected weather, so check the forecast before you book.

You can read every rule on our terms and conditions page.

What You Need to Book

Drivers must be at least 21, or 25 for certain vehicles, with a valid driver's license and an active full-coverage insurance policy in the same name. The policy must stay active until at least 7 days after you return the car. A security deposit is held from 1 day before your rental until 7 days after it, and you need at least $5,000 available. One additional driver is allowed if they are named on the contract and sign it, which is helpful on a four-hour round trip.
