Convertible Car Rental in Scottsdale: Why November Through Spring Is Top-Down Season

Summer in Scottsdale belongs to air conditioning. From late fall through spring, though, the Valley turns into one of the best places in the country to drive with the roof down. Days are sunny and mild, evenings are cool and clear, and the desert roads around the city are made for open-air driving. If you are visiting between November and spring, a convertible is the rental that makes the most of the weather. This guide covers why the season matters, which cars in our Scottsdale fleet open up to the sky, where to drive and how to plan the rental.
Why Late Fall Through Spring Is Top-Down Season
The difference between a summer drive and a winter drive in Scottsdale is dramatic. In the cooler months, midday is comfortable with the roof down, the sun is lower and softer for photos, and you can spend a full afternoon in the car without hiding from the heat. It is also the busiest stretch of the year for visitors, with the holidays, golf season and the big winter and spring events all bringing people to town.
Mornings and Evenings Change Fast
Desert air cools quickly after sunset. A drive that feels perfect at 2 PM can feel brisk by 6 PM, especially at speed with the roof down. Pack a light jacket, keep sunglasses in the car and plan your longest top-down stretch for late morning through mid-afternoon. Sunset drives are still worth it, just bring a layer.
Book Early in Peak Season
Because the cool months are also the busiest, the most requested cars go first, particularly around Thanksgiving, the December holidays and the big winter weekends. If you have specific dates, book as soon as your travel is set.
Which Cars in Our Scottsdale Fleet Go Top-Down
Ferrari 488 Spider
The Ferrari 488 Spider is the classic choice for a Scottsdale convertible rental. Its retractable hardtop folds away in seconds, and with the roof down you hear and feel everything the mid-engine V8 does. It is a two-seater with limited luggage room, so it suits couples and solo drivers who want the drive to be the highlight of the trip.
McLaren 720S Spider
The McLaren 720S Spider is the sharper, more dramatic option. It also has a retractable hardtop, and the open cabin makes the car's performance feel even more immediate. If you want the rental that turns every head at a resort valet stand, this is it.
Not Sure Which Fits Your Trip?
If you are deciding between the two, our Ferrari 488 vs McLaren 720S comparison walks through the differences in feel, comfort and personality. You can also browse every available car on our Scottsdale rentals page.
The Best Top-Down Drives Around Scottsdale
Old Town and Scottsdale Road
Start simple. A slow cruise through Old Town Scottsdale and up Scottsdale Road is a great way to get comfortable in the car, and it is where a convertible gets the most attention. Plan a stop for coffee or lunch and park in a well-lit public garage or with valet.
Pinnacle Peak and North Scottsdale
Head north toward Pinnacle Peak and the desert foothills for wider roads, fewer stoplights and big views of saguaros and mountains. The roads through North Scottsdale are paved and well maintained, which makes this area ideal for a relaxed afternoon loop.
Fountain Hills and the Beeline Highway
East of Scottsdale, Fountain Hills has rolling roads and mountain views, and the Beeline Highway heads northeast toward the high country. These routes give you a longer drive without straying far from your hotel.
Sunset in the Desert
Some of the best moments of a convertible rental happen in the last hour of daylight, when the mountains glow and the air cools. Plan a sunset loop, then head back toward Old Town for dinner.
Practical Tips for a Convertible Rental
Protect Yourself From the Sun
Even in winter, the Arizona sun is strong. Use sunscreen, wear a hat if your hair will be whipping around, and keep water in the car. Raise the roof when you park for long periods to keep the interior cool and protected.
Know the Rules
Every rental includes 75 to 120 miles per day depending on the vehicle, and extra miles cost $0.50 or $1. The car must stay within a 200-mile radius of the pickup zip code, and our terms prohibit track use, racing, speed tests, driving over 100 mph and unpaved surfaces. Use 91 octane or higher and return the car with the same fuel level. The full details are in our terms and conditions.
Weather Happens
Winter rain in the desert is not common, but it does happen. Our terms do not allow refunds or date changes for unexpected weather, so check the forecast and keep the roof up if a shower rolls through.
What You Need to Book
Drivers must be at least 21, or 25 for certain vehicles, with a valid license and active full coverage insurance in the same name that stays active until at least 7 days after the return. A security deposit is held from 1 day before until 7 days after the rental, and you need $5,000 available. If you pay by debit card, the deposit is provided in cash.
