How Old Do You Have to Be to Rent an Exotic Car? Age, License and Driver Rules Explained

Custom silver Corvette C8 from the Royal Rentals Scottsdale fleet, a popular exotic for drivers meeting the minimum rental age

One of the first questions people ask before renting a supercar is simple: am I old enough? Age rules for exotic and luxury rentals are stricter than at a typical airport counter, and they work together with license, insurance and driver rules. This guide explains exactly what our terms require in Scottsdale and Charlotte, what applies to a second driver, and how to make sure everything is in place before you book.

The Minimum Age to Rent

Under our rental terms, you must be at least 21 years old to rent, or at least 25 years old to rent certain vehicles. The higher age applies to some cars in the fleet, so if you are between 21 and 24, confirm that the car you want is available to you before you plan the trip around it. The easiest way is to ask when you submit the Book Now form or to call your local office.

Why Exotic Rentals Have Age Rules

Exotic and luxury cars are high-value vehicles with a lot of performance, and the renter takes full responsibility for the car until it is returned. Age requirements, along with insurance and deposit rules, help make sure every renter is in a position to take on that responsibility.

If You Are 21 to 24

Drivers in this age range can still rent many vehicles. Focus on the cars available to you, and pay extra attention to your insurance, since that is usually the step that takes longest to sort out for younger drivers.

License Requirements

You need a valid, active driver's license. You agree not to drive the car without your license, and the details you provide must be accurate. Our terms specifically prohibit giving false or incomplete information about your card, license or insurance.

Insurance Requirements

Before pickup, you must show an active full coverage car insurance policy in the same name as your driver's license. The policy must stay active until at least 7 days after you return the car. In the event of an accident, your insurance company is responsible for damages, loss of use or total loss, so call your insurer before you book and confirm how your policy applies to a rental. Our insurance guide covers this step in more detail.

Additional Driver Rules

One Additional Driver

Only one additional person besides you is allowed to drive the car. Their details must be on the contract, and they must sign and initial it. The additional driver has to meet the same requirements and agree to the same terms as you.

Nobody Else Behind the Wheel

No one else is allowed to drive the vehicle other than the people who sign the contract. You are fully responsible for damage or the cost of the vehicle if someone else causes damage while the car is rented in your name. The terms also prohibit using the car to teach someone how to drive, so a rental is not the place for a friend's first time in a supercar.

Deposit and Payment

Age is only one part of qualifying. A security deposit is held from 1 day before your rental until 7 days after it, and you need at least $5,000 available on your credit card limit or bank account. If you pay with a debit card, the security deposit must be provided in cash. If you pay with cash, both the rental cost and the deposit are paid in cash.

Rules Every Driver Agrees To

Every renter and additional driver agrees to the same prohibited-use rules. That means no track use, no racing, speed tests or demonstrations, no driving above 100 mph and no unpaved surfaces. The car must stay within a 200-mile radius of the pickup zip code, and smoking of any sort forfeits the entire deposit. The full list is in our terms and conditions.

A Quick Checklist Before You Book

Confirm you are at least 21, or 25 if the car you want requires it. Check that your license is valid and current. Confirm your full coverage insurance is in the same name as your license and will be active until at least 7 days after the return. Make sure $5,000 is available for the deposit, or plan for a cash deposit if you are paying by debit card. If someone else will drive, make sure they meet the same requirements and can sign the contract.
