Exotic Car Rental Mileage Limits Explained: Daily Miles, Extra Miles and the 200-Mile Radius

Lincoln Navigator luxury SUV from the Royal Rentals Scottsdale fleet, ready for a road trip within the rental mileage limits

Mileage is one of the most common questions renters ask before booking an exotic or luxury car, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Unlike a typical rental counter car with unlimited miles, exotic car rentals come with daily allowances and distance rules designed to protect high-value vehicles. Understanding exotic car rental mileage limits before you book helps you plan the right trip, avoid surprise charges and get the most out of your time behind the wheel. Here is exactly how mileage works at Royal Rentals in Scottsdale and Charlotte.

The Three Mileage Rules to Know

Our terms and conditions set out three rules about distance. Each one does a different job.

1. Your Daily Mileage Allowance

Every rental includes 75 to 120 miles per day, depending on the vehicle. The allowance for your car is part of your rental agreement, so check it when you book. Daily allowances are designed around the way most people enjoy an exotic: cruising around town, a scenic loop, dinner and a few stops in between.

2. Extra Mile Charges

If you drive beyond your allowance, extra miles cost either 50 cents or $1 each, depending on the vehicle. That is not a penalty so much as a planning item. If you know you want a longer drive, you can budget for the extra miles ahead of time.

3. The 200-Mile Radius

Separately from the daily allowance, the car must stay within a 200-mile radius of the pickup zip code. This rule is about where the car goes, not how far you drive in total. You could drive many miles in town over a long rental and still be inside the radius, but you cannot take the car to a destination outside it.

How to Plan a Road Trip Within the Rules

Map the Round Trip, Not Just the Destination

A common mistake is to look at the distance to a destination and forget the drive home. A day trip from Scottsdale to Sedona or from Charlotte to Asheville is a popular choice, but the round trip can add up to more than one day's allowance. Map the full route, including side trips and detours, before you go.

Spread Longer Drives Across a Multi-Day Rental

If you plan a big drive, a longer rental gives you more total allowance to work with. A relaxed in-town day followed by a road trip day often balances out well.

Work Out the Math Ahead of Time

Here is a simple example. If your car includes 100 miles per day and you plan a 250-mile day trip on a one-day rental, you would drive 150 miles over your allowance. Multiply those miles by your vehicle's extra mile rate to see the cost before you commit. Knowing the number in advance turns a surprise into a decision.

Popular Trips by City

Scottsdale and Phoenix

In-town days around Old Town, the resorts and the McDowell Mountains usually stay comfortably within a daily allowance. Day trips to red rock country take more planning. Our guide to Scottsdale to Sedona in a luxury rental walks through how to plan one.

Charlotte

Uptown, South End and the lakes around the city make easy days in a rental. For mountain drives, read our guide to Charlotte to Asheville in a luxury rental.

Other Driving Rules That Go With Mileage

Mileage rules sit alongside a few other driving rules in our terms. Keep them in mind as you plan your route:

No track use, racing, speed tests or demonstrations, and no driving over 100 mph.

No unpaved surfaces, so avoid dirt roads, gravel trails and unpaved scenic pull-offs.

Use 91 octane or higher fuel and return the car with the same fuel level or more.

Late returns cost $50 per 30 minutes, so leave a buffer at the end of a long drive.

Delivery Miles

If you would like the car delivered or returned somewhere other than our office, delivery and return within 15 miles of the office cost $60 each. Longer distances are covered in our terms. For anything beyond that, ask our team before you book.

Choosing the Right Car for a Longer Drive

If your plans include a lot of highway time with passengers and luggage, a luxury SUV such as the Lincoln Navigator, Escalade Premium Luxury or Bentley Bentayga in Scottsdale, or the Mercedes G63 in Charlotte, will be more comfortable over long distances. If your day is about a short, thrilling drive, a two-seater supercar is the more memorable choice.
